Phase 1 preview: tools are released in phases

HL7 Development and Troubleshooting, Simplified

Paste an HL7 v2 message and read it as structured segments, fields and components. Compare messages and prepare Mirth Connect snippets as those tools arrive. Made for the people who keep healthcare interfaces running.

No account needed for the Inspector preview. Use synthetic or de-identified data only.

Readable at a glance

Segments, fields and components are split out, so you can find a value without counting pipes.

Made for troubleshooting

Designed around two questions: what did this interface actually send, and what changed between these messages?

Privacy-minded by default

The Inspector preview parses in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent to our server.

What the toolkit is for

Two tools have a working preview today. The others are planned and are labelled so.

Message inspection Preview

Break an HL7 v2 message into segments, fields, components and subcomponents using the delimiters declared in MSH.

Open the Inspector

Field navigation Preview

Read values by address, such as PID-5.1, and move between segments instead of counting delimiters.

Message comparison Planned

Put two messages side by side and see which fields differ, for example before and after a transformation.

Mirth Connect helper tools Planned

Helpers for working with messages in Mirth Connect channels, such as field-path references for transformers.

From a failing message to a lead

A typical troubleshooting session with the Inspector preview.

  1. Paste a message. Copy a synthetic or de-identified HL7 v2 message from a log or test tool.
  2. Read its structure. Open a segment to see each field and its components, labelled by address.
  3. Narrow it down. Check the message type, control ID and version in the summary, then look at the fields your interface depends on.

Frequently asked questions

What is HL7 Developer Toolkit?

A set of browser-based tools for people who work with HL7 v2 messages: integration engineers, interface analysts and Mirth Connect developers. The goal is to make reading, navigating and troubleshooting messages faster. The tools are being released in phases, and this site shows what exists today and what is planned.

Is my message data uploaded to your servers?

Not in the current Inspector preview. The text you paste is parsed by JavaScript in your browser and is not sent to the server. Even so, please use synthetic or properly de-identified messages only, and do not paste real patient data.

Does the Inspector validate messages or certify conformance?

No. The preview splits a message into segments, fields, components and subcomponents so you can read it. It does not validate against HL7 standards, implementation guides or any conformance profile, and it makes no compliance claims. If validation features are added later, their scope and limits will be documented.

Which HL7 versions are supported?

The preview reads pipe-delimited HL7 v2.x messages structurally, using the delimiters declared in the MSH segment. It does not yet include version-specific data dictionaries. HL7 v3 and FHIR are out of scope for now.

Are you affiliated with Mirth Connect, NextGen or HL7 International?

No. This is an independent project. HL7 and Mirth are trademarks of their respective owners, and their names are used here only to describe what the tools work with.

Are the prices final?

No. The plans and prices on this site are proposed test values and may change. Checkout is not connected, and no paid plan can be purchased yet.
